My life would have looked radically different today if it not were for the College Republicans. Making the transition to college was difficult for me, as I’m sure it was for many others. And during that first year of school, I didn't have a “thing”: my own special niche. All of my new friends had joined clubs and sports teams, and I didn't really have anything. But I had signed up for the email alias of the St. Olaf College Republicans.
I had always considered myself to be to the right of the political spectrum, although I had never been heavily involved in politics. But I decided that I might as well attend a few of their meetings. Little did I know, that I would be one of the only members in a dying chapter. By the end of the year, there was only two of us that were returning. I was asked if I wanted a leadership role, and then began my time as Vice Chair of the chapter. Since then, I have become more involved and am fortunate enough to be serving on Minnesota College Republican state board.
College Republicans literally has changed my life. Not only did I decide to switch my major (from Biology to Philosophy), start a chapter of Young Americans for Liberty on my campus, change my career aspirations, and generally become a more informed and active voter, I have become a better person. I have learned about confidence, patience, and determination. I have learned to meet adversity head-on and not shy away from voicing my opinions. College Republicans has been more than a club to me, it has been a family. A family of brothers and sisters who encourage you to be your best and to achieve that which you thought was never possible. I am so incredibly thankful to have had the chance to join this organization, and look forward to doing all that I can to help it thrive. Hearts, Stars, and CRs!
